Market on the Karlsplatz, Vienna in WinterEmmerich Kirall, 1925

Emmerich Kirall (1875-1939) is presumed to have been Austrian, although no information is available about him. This watercolour is chosen for the great number of vignettes of people in a marketplace, busily following their trades. It’s clear that the artist was adept at historical and nostalgic paintings with populist appeal, and a picture like this fascinates the eye with all its stories and tiny details to uncover.
